Girls on the Run

The Fort Madison Family YMCA is excited to bring this 10 Week Program to Fort Madison! Girls on the Run is a nationally recognized program where hundreds of communities across the United States bring together pre-teen girls to help them develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games, culminating in a fun, celebratory 5k Run/Walk.

The Fort Madison Y has specifically designed our 10 week program to empower, enrich, and enhance the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of area girls grades 3rd through 5th. Lead by certified Girls on the Run Coaches from our community.

Starting August 27th and meeting twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) after school (5pm – 6:15pm) through November 2nd at the Fort Madison Family YMCA, our coaches will teach life skills through exciting, engaging lessons emphasizing the joy of movement in three parts: self understanding, establishing and valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world as a whole.

Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, establish confidence in who they are, develop character strength, respond to others and oneself with compassion and care, ignite positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to our community and society at large through a team created and executed community service project.

The program will conclude on Saturday, November 2nd with a fun 5k (3.1 mile) Run/Walk where our teams will come together to celebrate the skills and abilities the girls have obtained over the course of the program.

Program participation cost is $40. Program cost includes 20 lessons conducted by certified GOTR coaches, an official GOTR t-shirt, participation in the season-ending 5K for your GOTR participant, a water bottle, and a snack at each practice. In addition each participant will receive a 5K finisher’s medal.

No girl is turned away due to their inability to afford the cost of the program. Through the generosity of our community partners, the Fort Madison Family YMCA offers financial assistance to those in need. To fill out an application for assistance please stop by the YMCA during regular office hours (Monday-Thursday 5am-9pm, Friday 5am-8pm, and Saturday 8am-1pm).

The registration deadline is August 23rd. Forms are available by clicking the link below or by stopping by the YMCA. For more information on this program contact Noah Dean, Program Director, at 319-372-2403 or email noah.dean@fortmadisony.org.
